BYR Junior FIXTURES 2009-10

Draft Bath Junior Fixtures for 2009-10 have been completed.

There are a couple of ammendments which need attention, relating to specific age grades concentration of consecutive matches. The Fixture List will be published as soon as possible. [Thanks to Andy Polson for all his efforts]

Once published, the Up-to-Date BYR Junior Section Fixture List will be viewed through the link on left of Web Page - "Junior Fixtures".

NOTE: Please monitor your age grade JUNIOR FIXTURES as this is the central record of fixtures, and it is this record which is amended as fixture alterations arise.

We make every attempt to comply with the RFU Structured Season, and with the RFU directive (enforced by our CB Somerset RFU) that individual age grade players will play no more more than 17 club and 17 school fixtures per season. We do not adopt a policy of fixures every Sunday, important daylight coaching sessions take place on some Sundays.

As the season progresses, with poor weather, cup competitions etc, some matches will be postponed, cancelled, altered etc, so if you are an opposition Club seeking a fixture with a particular age grade, please feel at ease to check our fixture list and make contact and we will do our utmost to oblige with a fixture, subject to the above RFU directions: harrison@bathyouthrugby.co.uk

RUGBY COACH - come & join us - 2009-10!

Bath Youth Rugby Junior Section is always seeking NEW COACHES to join our coaching staff. (Female or Male)

In principal, you will need to be able to commit one week day evening and every Sunday morning to your designated Age Grade. The Junior Section provides coaching at U13 / U14 / U15 / U16 & Colts (U17-U19 inc). We aim to have at least three coaches for each Age Grade, so there is a bit of coach attendance flexibility.

Bath Youth Rugby are committed to coach education and this is a great opportunity to improve and develop your coaching skills. At Bath Youth Rugby the players are already committed to the cause.

Normally, we would expect you to have attained coaching qualifiaction RFU Level I, but in certain circumstances we can assist you in attaining that Level.

We encourage and support all our coaches to attain at least RFU Level 2, and to continue their coach education during their time with Bath Youth Rugby.

STUDENTS - coaching opportunity?  It may be that you are attending College or University in the Bath area, and that a season coaching one of our younger youth sides will be an asset to your course, your personal coaching development and your future CV - get in touch with us now - we are prepared to help by financing you through your RFU Level I coaching course! If a couple of you want to come together and coach the same age grade that can be arranged.

PLAYERS - thinking of entering formal coaching for the first time?  It may be that you are a player, who is thinking about "getting into adult coaching", possibly with the intention of coaching at your own club - but your own club (where everyone knows you!) might not be the best place for you to start your coaching devlopment, a supported season coaching a youth squad might provide a stable base - Get in touch and talk it through!

One of the big "coaching pluses" at Bath Youth Rugby is that as a coach, that is exactly what you will be required to do - every Age Grade has a Team Manager who deals with all administration - so you will not be required to be on the telephone every evening trying to sort things out!

NB: Please be aware that none of our coaching staff are paid for their services, we are prepared to consider out-of-pocket expenses on an individual basis. All our coaches and administrators must be RFU CRB checked.

If you (and a mate!) are slightly interested and would like more information....get in touch with John HARRISON (Chairman):

Bath Rugby - Joe MADDOCK & Co - Bath Youth

On a freezing cold Tuesday night on Lansdown, Bath U13 & U14 Squads were privileged to receive a half-term treat in the form of a guest coaching session delivered by Bath Rugby New Zealand winger Joe MADDOCK, assisted by regular Bath Rugby United front row player Mark LILLEY and Bath Rugby Academy player lock Adrian GRIFFITHS.

In preparation for matches next Sunday 02.11.2008 v Wimborne, the three Bath Rugby guest coaches provided the young Bath Youth players with a floodlit coaching session which included quick accurate handling, fixing defensive players in attack, and clean presentation of the ball on the ground in contact.

It was a particular pleasure to have Mark LILLEY return to Kingswood to coach, as Mark is a player who played his youth rugby at Bath Youth Rugby, prior to joining Bath Rugby Academy. He has started this season atached to Division One Newbury Blues, but is regularly selected for Bath United, and is working hard in the hope of attaining Bath Rugby 1st XV selection. We wish him well!

Bath Youth Rugby wish to record sincere thanks to these players for giving so freely of their time and experience to "grass roots" rugby (particularly on a night of such foul weather!) and we extend additional thanks to Bath Rugby (Pam Burke & Frank Butler) for arranging the attendance of the players Joe, Mark and Aide, and we look forward to seeing them again at future Bath Youth coaching sessions at Kingswod. Our thanks!

THEFT personal property whilst at Rugby

Regrettably, attention is once again drawn to the recent theft of cash from a player's clothing, left in the Kingswood Pavilion, and theft of an iPod left in a player's bag when playing away.

Players are urged NOT to bring valuables to Rugby Sessions, and if it is necessary, to ensure that such valuables are safeguarded by a responsible person. Whilst "Valuables Bags" may be arranged at the discretion of the Team Manager or Coach, it is not the responsibility of BYR coaching staff to safeguard players' personal property. The same applies when we visit other clubs. Please remain vigilant.

BYR players meet again - Bath Utd v Bristol Utd

THREE former Bath Youth Rugby players met on the pitch...............

Playing for Bath United, Tom Kessell, last season's Bath Youth Colts' scrum half played against Bristol United which included Ollie Hayes, last season's Bath Youth Colts hooker. Bath United fly half Luke Cozens also played for Bath Youth Rugby.

REPORT from the  Bath Rugby Website:

"United stunned by first half Bristol try blitz"

7 October 2008,By Simon Clark

Bath United lost 50-21 to Bristol United at Clifton RFC last night.

A United side featuring players on loan from Newbury Blues and the Cornish All Blacks had no answer to Bristol’s first half try blitz as the home side scored six tries before the break and with added conversions, were 43-0 down at half-time.

The second half belonged to Bath and tries from flanker Adrian Griffiths, centre Mike Ward and replacement Tom Kessell helped close the gap. Fly half Luke Cozens successfully converted all three tries to make the score 43-21.

Although awards were presented to indviduals, the theme of the evening was the continuing need for a “Squad Mentality”. Short video presentations preceded each of the age grade’s season report. During the evening the audience heard that almost forty players from Bath Youth Rugby had played B&NES District Representative rugby this season, with thirty of those players going on to play County Level representative rugby (U15-U18).

From within that group there have been three Bath U16 players (Olly WOODBURN, Joe PATRICK,  Jackson SZABO) and one U18 player (Ollie HAYES) who attained representative honours at South West Divisional Rugby, with Gareth EVANS going on to represent Wales U16 and Ollie HAYES (also of Bath Rugby Academy) representing England U18.

In addition, player's personal development path has been strong this season with nine players from Bath Junior Section selected to play for Bath Rugby Academy U17 v England U16.

Acknowledging the commitment of the players and the immense support provided by the coaches, team managers, administrators, referees, and parents was a common thread from speakers throughout the evening, and the Bath Junior Section reinforced its policy to support the development of student coaches from the University of Bath, and Bath Spa University, who have been coaching with us over the past two seasons.

Funds raised during the Evening’s Raffle have been donated to Tamara Johnson Trust Fund – Tamara, 26 years old, Bath Ladies Rugby player, sustained a serious neck injury in February 2008 whilst playing for Bath Ladies v Saracens. Tamara is receiving rehabilitation in the Spinal Unit of Odstock Hospital, Salisbury, she faces a long rehabilitation road, and support was pledged from Bath Youth Rugby. We wish her well!

Bath U16 prop selected for England U16 Squad

Congragulations! - Henry THOMAS (Prop) has been selected into the final England U16 Squad

Henry is a product of the Bath Mini and Junior Sections, and currently attends Millfield School.

Henry was amongst four current Bath U16 players, Joe PATRICK (openside flanker), Jackson SZABO (wing), Henry THOMAS  (prop) and Ollie WOODBURN (centre), who were selected from the Somerset County U16 Squad to the Under 16 South-West England Divisional Training Squads.

Prior to Christmas our four Bath U16 players travelled to Ireland to represent South West England U16 Squads in two matches against their Munster counterparts, and in January at Bryanston School (Dorset), Joe, Jackson & Henry took part in a further South West Divisional coaching weekend which culminated in a match in which SW England U16 defeated Scottish Exiles (15-3).

In a mid-January weekend session at Broadstreet RFC (Coventry), Joe, Jackson & Henry represented  their Division when the trio were selected to represent SW England v  North of England Division and SW England  v Midland Division.

It is a great tribute to these four players that they have represented the SW England U16 Division. Henry is the only one to proceed further in the selection system, and we wish him well with the final England U16 cut!

On behalf of all those with whom Henry has played and all those who have coached him, Bath Youth Rugby wish him the best of luck!

ELEVEN Bath U16 selected for Somerset U16

ELEVEN Bath Youth  U16 players have been selected into the Somerset Schools U16 Squad. http://www.somersetrfu.co.uk/somersetteam.php?agegroup=16

Alphabetical congragulations to: Gareth EVANS - Matt FOTHERINGHAM - Charlie GOODWIN -  Alex HAWKINS - Jake HOWELLS -  Joe PATRICK - Liam PORTER - Mike UREN - Jackson SZABO - Henry THOMAS - Ollie WOODBURN

It is the Someset RFU policy that for players who are not successful in selection for the U16 Somerset Squad, there remains the possibility of an additional selection pathway to Somerset County U16 through the Super Six District Competition. The Super Six programme includes an 22-man represntative squad match between the Eastern Conference and Western Conference.

With no real explanation Somerset RFU have announced on the website that the U16 EAST v WEST confernces match is cancelled and will not be played. Clearly, Somerset RFU have failed to deliver the published and promoted opportunity and pathway for these U16 players. This matter will be raised with Somerset RFU.

Any other queries - contact Somerset U16 Head Coach Dave OWEN - 01275 848 579
